Children of the City is thrilled to announce its expanded assistance to high school juniors and seniors with aspirations to college. Having finished the first year of our pilot College Bound Project with all students successfully enrolled in college, we are confident that our comprehensive approach is working. All of these students were at risk of dropping out of high school, and faced obstacles such as difficult home
environments, negative peer pressure, behavioral problems at home and at school, and difficulty staying focused and completing assignments. Yet continued support from Children of the City has kept them on track to realize their dream of college enrollment.
With a strengthened partnership with New York Cares, we now have been able to increase the amount of students enrolled in our College Bound Project for the 2010-2011 semester with an array of services which include SAT preparation and individualized tutoring. The College Bound program not only provides the tools necessary to propel these children further along in their educational journeys, but also to dispel the doubt they harbor regarding their ability to have a successful academic future.
Through our partnership with New York Cares, we are thrilled to offer Kaplan SAT Prep Classes at no charge to High School juniors whose families do not have the financial means to pay for these services. This 8-month course, generally priced at $1,300 per student, takes the participating students through a comprehensive training designed to teach studying and test-taking techniques. Each student is given one-on-one help by tutors trained in the methods to approach and succeed at the SAT test that will play a large role in determining college acceptance.
“I can see their smiles and their pride as they continue to improve after doing each practice test” shared Site Director Fabiola Arellano. “When we tell them they are doing well, it boosts their confidence and shows on their performance. We are able to see these students perform exceptionally well, and get into their colleges of choice.”
We have found that the students we work with are eager to learn and excited by the prospect of the bright future a strong academic background will provide. “Seeing the students make progress throughout the sessions as they work hard and take time out to study is incredible motivation. The practice tests show improvement. The results of vocabulary tests get the students excited,” shared one of the New York Cares tutors, Jin. Through the College Bound Project, Children of the City also provides mentoring, application assistance, parent meetings, and guidance to high school juniors and seniors. When given the opportunity to make this future a reality, they excel in ways they never imagined possible.
