About Us
Since 1981, Children of the City has been serving the underprivileged children in the inner-city communities of Southwest Brooklyn. Starting out as a children’s prevention outreach in the early years, our services have evolved to include trauma intervention, counseling, an after-school and summer program, courtroom and legal advocacy, social work, guardianship, financial counseling, youth mentoring, and other as-needed services to help children and their families achieve success in education, social relationships, home, financial and career. Together we reach the children at home, at school, on the streets and playgrounds, and at our facility.
Our dedicated team includes many certified professionals, along with 50 highly committed and trained volunteers who visit close to one thousand children every single month. During the year we maintain current information on over 500 families in the community representing approximately 2,000 children, and use this information as a channel to serve them effectively by earning their trust and giving them the affirmation, encouragement and resources they need. We are able to be a
positive influence to the young lives we reach every day, helping to give them a better tomorrow.

History
Joyce Mattera founded Children of the City in 1981 to reach out to children initially in the Sunset Park community of Brooklyn, New York. At the conclusion of a children's outreach where nearly 500 children attended, she not only saw the physical needs of these children but their social dilemma as well, and was determined to do something about it. House-by-house, block-by-block, a small group of volunteers began visiting children weekly to assess their needs and invite them to various community programs. Over time, we have earned the trust and respect of an entire community to such a degree that they welcome us as we work with them, providing them much needed support and services as they face often overwhelming challenges. Throughout the course of the year we maintain current and accurate information on hundreds of families representing approximately 2,000 children in the community. We have, and continue to channel help to them by means of academic support, life skills training, counseling and advocacy, Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas gifts for hundreds of children each year, coats and blankets, back-to-school supplies, furniture, food distribution locations and much more. Children of the City comes alongside children and their families and helps them succeed.
